Even here in Indiana, where the whether gets cold and the snow practically comes by the ton, roofing contractors work all year round. This means that, technically, you are able to re-roof your home at any time throughout the year.
Now, this isn’t to say you necessarily want to have your home re-roofed at Christmas time, for example, but contrary to popular belief and practice, you are not required to have your home re-roofed during the summer months. In fact, getting your home re-roofed during offseason months can actually be a better idea in some circumstances.
Roofing during the spring and summer season
Spring and summer are the busiest times of year for roofing companies. It makes sense, in theory—the weather is nice, so people feel like they should have their roof installed while it’s sunny and there’s no chance of rain. Additionally, some people have time off during the summer months or are able to take time to work from home while the roofing work is being completed.
However, one downside to putting on a roof during summer is that shingles can much more easily get damaged if the roofer is not careful with the nail gun. This is because the weather is so warm that the shingles get softer under direct sunlight, so the nails can go straight through the shingles, as though they’re made of Jell-O. Therefore, roofers need to be extremely careful about the amount of pressure they’re using in their nail guns, and avoid having too many people walking on the roof at once, especially on top of new shingles.
Additionally, the weather can be so hot during the summer that if you accidentally schedule your roofing during a hot spell, the workers will likely need to take more breaks. This is, of course, for their safety—extreme heat can be dangerous and lead to dehydration and heat stroke.
Roofing during the winter season
Believe it or not, there are some advantages to roofing in winter. Homeowners will have their pick of companies, as many people do not like to have their roofs done when the weather is colder. For most composite asphalt shingles, manufacturers do not change their warranties based on the temperature at installation. Additionally, the thermal sealing process for new shingles goes faster when the weather is 40 degrees or below. Roofing prices also tend to be cheaper in these months.
Roofing during the autumn season
Roofing during the autumn months might provide you with the best of both worlds. The weather is nicer than during the winter months and less likely to be overheated than during the summer months, which means workers may be able to get the job done more quickly. Additionally, you are more likely to be able to get a quick appointment, because the busy season has passed for roofing contractors.
