Are Metal Roofs Louder Than Shingles When It Rains?

April 21, 2017

Folks across the country have more options than ever when it comes to choosing to install a new roof on their homes. Traditional asphalt shingles are still very popular, but other roofing materials, like metal, are becoming more common all over the place. However, despite its rise in popularity, metal roofing in Miami County, IN seems to have a variety of misconceptions associated with it.

One of the most common misconceptions about metal roofing is that it’s louder than a traditional roofing material during rainstorms. That’s simply not true! There are a few reasons why metal roofing isn’t as loud as you might expect.

The source of the stigma

The misconception about metal roofs being loud didn’t just come out of thin air. Anyone who’s ever been in a barn with a metal roof during a rainstorm knows how loud it can be. That’s because metal roofs on barns typically are just attached to the barn’s beams and struts. They’re also usually uninsulated, and made from low-quality metal. Metal roofs that we install on homes, though, aren’t like barn roofs at all.

So, why are metal roofs so quiet? Here are three key factors to understand:

  • Metal roofs are insulated: Every home should be fully insulated. It’s especially important to insulate walls, garages, crawlspaces, attics and roofs. Insulation keeps inside air in, and keeps outside air out. Insulation also has a sound dampening effect for all noises, and this includes noises coming from the roof. We insulate all of the roofs we install, so you can rest assured that you shouldn’t hear any loud noises coming from the roof, even during a major storm.

  • Metal roofs have a sturdy foundation: As mentioned above, barn roofs are usually just attached to struts and beams. Whenever something lands on the roof (particularly raindrops), the metal roof clangs on the beams and creates a jarring noise. Our roofs are installed on top of a sturdy foundation; there’s no chance of clanging when something hits the roof.

  • Metal roofs are made from high-quality metal: Tin roofs, like those found on barns, are more likely to make noise because tin is a lower-quality metal. The roofs we install, though, are made from high-quality metal that’s more likely to be quiet.

Unfortunately, metal roofing in Miami County, IN gets an undeserved bad rap for other reasons, too. We do our best to eliminate some of the following myths regarding metal roofing:

  • Metal roofing doesn’t attract lightning: Lightning tends to strike the highest point in an area, regardless of the material. Unless your roof is taller than everything around it, there’s a very slim chance of it being struck by lightning.

  • Metal roofing won’t rust: Metal that’s left outside tends to rust over time. So, it kind of makes sense that people assume a metal roof rusts, too. However, our metal roofs are covered with a special coating that prevents rust.

Don’t believe everything you hear about metal roofing in Miami County, IN! It’s truly one of your best bets when it comes to choosing a new roof for your home. Give K. Graber Construction LLC a call today to learn more about metal roofing, or to schedule one of our experts to install a metal roof on your home or barn.
