First settled in the early 1830s, Whitley County became an official county of Indiana in 1835. It was named after Colonel William Whitley, a Kentucky pioneer who was killed during the War of 1812. Throughout the 19th century Whitley County was primarily a center for agriculture and lumber, with other business driving the local economy as well. Since then the county’s economy has shifted towards manufacturing and technology, with companies such as Dana Holding Corporation and BAE Systems in operation in the area.
