First settled in the early 1830s, Whitley County became an official county of Indiana in 1835. It was named after Colonel William Whitley, a Kentucky pioneer who was killed during the War of 1812. Since then the county’s economy has shifted towards manufacturing and technology, with companies such as Dana Holding Corporation and BAE Systems in operation in the area.
