Located in the northwestern region of the state of Indiana, Starke County is home to approximately 23,000 people and covers an area of 309 square miles. The county seat is Knox, which is located near the center of the county. Starke County is a part of the South Bend-Mishawaka metro statistical area. 

The area that now comprises Starke County was originally inhabited by Native Americans, including the Potawatomi and Miami tribes. The first Europeans to arrive in the region were fur traders during the late 1700s. 

The county was officially established in 1835, and was named after Revolutionary War General John Starke. Throughout the mid-1800s the region was primarily agricultural, but later on commerce morphed towards the timber trade. In the early 1900s it shifted again, this time toward manufacturing, and today the county is home to a variety of industries including healthcare, education, and agriculture. 

It’s also home to numerous attractions that keep both residents and visitors busy. These Starke County ttractions include Koontz Lake, a 246 acre lake that offers plenty of opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming, and other water recreation. The Bass Lake Beach and Campground is another popular destination. There is also the Starke County Forest, the North Judson Eried Trail, the Knox-Center Township Fire Station Museum, the Hamlet Windmill Museum, the Starke County Historical Society Museum, the Historic Henry F. Schricker Home, and more. 

In addition, Starke County has a thriving arts and culture scene. The county hosts a range of events throughout the year, including the Starke County Fair, the Fire and Ice Festival, and the Mint Festival, celebrating the county’s agricultural history.
