Located in the south-central region of Michigan, Branch County is bordered by the state of Indiana to the south. According to the US Census Bureau the county covers roughly 520 square miles and is home to around 42,739 people. The county seat is Coldwater. 

The area that is now Branch County was originally inhabited by the Potawatomie Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived during the early 1820s, and in 1829 the county was officially established. It was named after John Branch, who served as the Secretary of the Navy under President Andrew Jackson. 

During the mid-19th century Branch County served as an important center for agriculture, and produced great amounts of wheat, corn, and other crops. The county was also the home of several small industrial towns such as Quincy and Coldwater. When the late 19th and early 20th centuries arrived the county saw a shift towards more manufacturing, with factories producing a range of goods, including furniture, textiles, and machinery.
