History of Marshall County
Established on February 7, 1835, by the Indiana State Legislature, Marshall County was named in honor of U.S. Chief Justice John Marshall, who passed away that same year. The county’s government was organized in 1836, during the early years of settlement and prior to the forced removal of the Potawatomi people in 1838. This tragic event, known as the Potawatomi Trail of Death, saw Chief Menominee and 859 Potawatomi Indians forcibly relocated from Indiana to present-day Kansas, covering a distance of 660 miles. The first settlers arrived in 1835, primarily from New England, bringing with them a rich cultural heritage that has influenced the county’s development.
