History of Wabash County

Wabash County, Indiana, is located in the north-central part of the state and has a history that reaches back thousands of years. Long before European settlement, the area was home to Indigenous communities, including the Miami people. French explorers and traders later encountered these communities during the 17th century. Wabash County was officially organized in 1832 from portions of Cass and Grant counties and was named for the Wabash River, which runs through the region. The river’s name comes from the Miami word “Wabashike,” meaning “pure white,” a reference to the area’s limestone riverbed.

The city of Wabash, which became the county seat, was platted in 1834 and grew as transportation routes such as the Wabash and Erie Canal helped bring activity and development to the area. Wabash also holds a unique place in history for becoming one of the first electrically lighted cities in the world in 1880, when lights illuminated the courthouse and nearby streets. Today, Wabash County continues to reflect its deep heritage while moving forward as a vibrant Indiana community.
